Under the leadership of Founder and President, David H. Melvin, the firm's success is directly attributable to the character and guidance of its Board of Directors. Each professional who serves as a board member brings a unique perspective along with technical and management expertise to the diversity required for success. With a philosophy of Character First in hiring practices, service delivery, and personal and spiritual growth, Melvin Engineering continues to experience growth and success that impacts the lives of its employees, clients and surrounding communities.

David H. Melvin, PE, LEED AP

President

After completing undergraduate studies at the University of Florida, David and his wife Patty, returned to Northwest Florida and in 1989 established David H. Melvin, Inc., Consulting Engineers.  With headquarters located in their hometown of Marianna and an office in Tallahassee, Melvin Engineering is recognized throughout Northwest Florida as a firm that is known for providing quality services with a commitment to the clients it serves.    

In addition to serving on many civic boards and advisory committees, David's passion during the past 11 years has been to bring forward the need for character strengthening and building not only in his personal life but in the culture of Melvin Engineering.  In his message to new employees, David states, "In 1999 we decided to be a company known not only for the quality of work we provide,  but for being a "Company of Character."  He translated his enthusiasm for character and the role it plays in determining success into the formation of the Character Council of Florida, a non-profit organization also headquartered in Marianna. 

David's professional success has been recognized by the Florida State University School of Business as the 2006 Entrepreneurial of Exellence Award winner, the first-ever recipient of the Jackson County Excellence in Leadership Award in 2009, and, most recently, a nominee for the 2011 Economic Development Volunteer of the Year Award sponsored by the Florida Economic Development Council.  Each year staff members select a quality which best represents the character David consistently demonstrates.  Previous recognitions include the qualities of Benevolence, Justice, and Wisdom. 

David and Patty are the proud parents of eight children.

Gene Nobles, PE

Gene holds the special distinction of having been the first person hired by David Melvin soon after Melvin Engineering was established.  With almost 20 years of service, Gene has applied his engineering expertise to a variety of projects and is recognized by clients for his humor and problem-solving approach to challenging issues.  In addition to general administration and oversite, his demonstrated leadership and success in design, plans production, contracts, and project management uniquely qualify Gene as the resident expert for all transportation-related projects.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering with honors from the University of Florida, an Associate of Arts degree Cum Laude from Chipola College and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Florida. Gene works closely with the Florida Department of Transportation, District 3, in addition to several local government entities throughout the Northwest Florida region.

Gene's commitment to uphold and integrate excellent character is reflected in his work ethic, service to community, and his family.  Recent recognitions of his character include the qualities of Loyalty, Thriftiness, and Joyfulness.  Gene and his wife, Kim, are the parents of three children.

Sean Martin, PE, SECB, LEED AP BD+C

Vice President

As the manager of the Tallahassee office, Sean has been with the firm since 1996.  Recognized for his thoroughness and expertise in the specialized discipline of structural engineering and design, Sean’s responsibilities include total project management for all projects requiring structural engineering and threshold inspection. He holds a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Florida State University and is certified in Structural Engineering by the Structural Engineering Certification Board.  He is a licensed Professional Engineer in  Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Pennsylvania.  One of the ways he contributes to the Tallahassee community is through his membership with the Sunrise Rotary Club.  He was club Past President, 2010, and continues to serve as a member of the Board of Directors.

Recognized for his professional contributions as well as his consistent demonstration of good character, qualities which reflect who he is include Self-control, Endurance, and Virtue. Sean and his wife Christine, are the parents of three children and reside in Tallahassee.
