Sneads Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sprayfield Expansion

Project Description: 

The upgrade of existing facilities included increased capacity from 495,000 gallons per day (gpd) to 1.1 million gpd.  The effluent sprayfield was expanded from 40 acres to 203 acres.  Accomplished in multiple phases over several years with funding from USDA-Rural Development and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection - Community Development Block Grant program, the facility recently underwent another upgrade to significantly increase capacity.    

This state-of-the-art facility was recently recognized by Aero-Mod, Inc., a Manhattan, Kansas based manufacturer of wastewater treatment plant equipment, as the recipient of the 2010 Aero-Mod Excellece in Operations Award.  


Green Circle BioEnergy, Inc.

Project Location: Cottondale, Florida2008 excellence in economic development award

Project Description:

Located on 256 acres in Cottondale, Florida, this large scale international project was the first of its kind located in the United States.   Several factors contributed to the decision of company officials to locate in Northwest Florida including the plentiful inventory of natural resources.  Before agreements were reached and the final site selection announced, however, Melvin Engineering professionals contributed their expertise to the viability of the project in terms of issues related to the environment, permitting, site design, utilities expansion, roadway access, 4-lane highway design modifications, and rail accessibility.  In addition, the project had to meet an accelerated 12 month construction schedule.   Much of the engineering work required to ensure the project's success project was completed prior to the final announcement of site location.  DHM services included design for site, civil, structure, utilities, and roadway.  Needless to say, the project took top priority.  Additional services included grants administration, landscape architecture, construction contract managment, and construction engineering inspection.

The economic impact of the project - a $110 million investment and the creation of 227 jobs - was recognized by the US Department of Commerce and awarded the "Excellence in Rural Economic Development Award" for 2008. 


Family Dollar Distribution Center

Project Location: Marianna Florida

Project Description for Site, Utilities, and Inspection Services:

The Family Dollar Distribution Center, a 907,000 sq. ft. facility located near the I-10/S.R. 276 interchange on 76 acres, required the extension of the City of Marianna’s water, wastewater and natural gas systems. Melvin Engineering provided design, permitting and inspection services for the project.  With the decision of Family Dollar executives to locate in Marianna/Jackson County, extensive roadway and additional infrastructure designs were required.  The Distribution Center was the first business to located in the Marianna/Jackson County Distribution Park complex.

Blountstown Multi-Use Greenway

Project Location:  Blountstown, Calhoun County, Florida

Project Description:

Located in the northwest quadrant of the City of Blountstown and winding for approximately 4 miles, the greenway trail spans from the Apalachicola River on the southeast to Sam Adkins Park on the northwest.  Portions of the trail follow the former Marianna and Blountstown Railroad which served the area from 1909 to 1972.  Melvin Engineering was part of the Planning and Development, Environmental Assessments, Grants Administration, Right of Way Acquisition coordination with the Florida Department of Transportation, and Construction Engineering Inspection.
