Sneads Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sprayfield Expansion

sneads wwtp and control building

Project Date:    Multi-phase, Multi-year Project

Project Location:  Sneads, Florida

Project Description:

The upgrade of existing facilities included increased capacity from 495,000 gallons per day (gpd) to 1.1 million gpd.  The effluent sprayfield was expanded from 40 acres to 203 acres.  Accomplished in multiple phases over several years with funding from USDA-Rural Development and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection - Community Development Block Grant program, the facility recently underwent another upgrade to significantly increase capacity.

This state-of-the-art facility was recently recognized by Aero-Mod, Inc., a Manhattan, Kansas based manufacturer of wastewater treatment plant equipment, as the recipient of the 2010 Aero-Mod Excellece in Operations Award.

The design of the Sneads Wastewater Treatment Plant began prior to 2002, date of the groundbreaking ceremonies and construction start.  Age of the existing facility and treatment demand were the primary motivating factors which helped garner quick support from the Florida Department of Environemental Protection and USDA-Rural Development, large funding sources.  The largest single customer, Apalachee Correctional Institution, was also agreeable to provide considerable resources.  The new plant meets all FDEP Design Standards and Guidlines.  Melvin Engineering provided grants administration, civil and structural design, and construction engineering inspection services.
