Under the leadership of Founder and President, David Melvin, the firm's success is directly attributable to the leadership and guidance provided by it's Board of Directors. Among the five Senior Engineers, there is almost 125 years of combined experience in the field of engineering and landscape architecture. Each individual brings a unique perspective to the diversity a full service firm requires. With a philosophy of Character First! in hiring practices, service delivery, and personal and spiritual growth, Melvin Engineering continues to experience success and impacts the lives of it's employees and the community.

After completing undergraduate studies at the University of Florida, David and his wife, Patty, moved back to the Panhandle where David accepted a position with an engineering firm in Tallahassee. Even though they were much closer to Marianna, they still weren’t “home”. In 1989 they made the move to Marianna where they opened the doors to David H. Melvin, Inc., Consulting Engineers. Since then, the Melvins have experienced growth in their family – they have 8 children – as well as professional growth. David’s commitment to serve clients and the community has been rewarded with loyalty from both. Many of today’s clients were clients in 1989. During the last 18 years, the community has grown and David’s service and generosity have contributed to the quality of life in Jackson County.

In addition to serving on many civic boards and advisory committees, David’s passion during the past seven years has been to bring an awareness of the need for character strengthening and building. Recognizing the need for character in his own life, David implemented the CharacterFirst! initiative in the business and since then has experienced significant positive results with employees and their families as well. His enthusiasm in sharing the results of CharacterFirst! and its positive impact has translated into the formation of the Character Council of Florida, a non-profit organization, dedicated to bringing an awareness of the importance of demonstrating good character in all facets of life - the workplace, school, community, and family. David serves as the organization’s President and with a broad-based Board of Directors and support staff, has a vision and commitment for continued growth, education, training and implementation. In recent years, David has been recognized by his staff for demonstrating the character qualities of Loyalty, Persuasiveness, Faith, Endurance, and Sincerity.

David’s professional success was recently recognized by the Florida State University School of Business. In 2006 he was named The Jim Moran Institute’s Entrepreneurial of Excellence Award winner, an award very much esteemed by the business community. In 2004 he received the Ethics in Business Award from the Tallahassee Region of Rotary International. Demonstrating the character quality of Humility, David quickly acknowledges that whatever success he enjoys is a result of the investment by others in his life.
